Kempower and EO install 342 charging points for electric buses

The rapid expansion of electric bus fleets in the UK underscores a pressing need for robust charging infrastructure, as evidenced by the installation of 342 electric bus chargers by Finnish manufacturer Kempower and UK-based EO Charging over the past three years. With approximately 1,570 new zero-emission buses projected to hit UK roads in 2024—marking a significant 36% increase year-on-year—the collaboration aims to ensure that these vehicles are supported by adequate charging facilities. The partnership has already equipped 11 bus depots, primarily in London and Scotland, with fast charging technology, delivering a total of 20.23 GWh of energy to electric buses through their chargers.

The recent installation of three pantographs in Scotland highlights the innovative strides being made in charging technology, with Kempower's system enabling charging speeds of up to 500 kW. This advancement not only facilitates rapid charging but also minimizes downtime for bus operations, a critical factor for maintaining service efficiency. Rolle Nieminen, Kempower’s Head of Sales for the UK and Ireland, emphasized that this successful deployment demonstrates the readiness of the UK’s bus networks for fast, automated charging solutions. As the demand for electric buses continues to grow, the implications of such infrastructure developments are profound, potentially setting a standard for future urban transport systems.
