The urgency of addressing industrial wastewater treatment, particularly for dye-laden effluents, cannot be overstated; the environmental implications of untreated wastewater are profound, necessitating innovative and sustainable solutions. The study introduces a hydrogel adsorbent that not only meets these criteria but also boasts enhanced mechanical properties and adsorption performance, positioning it as a viable option for industries grappling with the complexities of dye wastewater management.

The hydrogel, referred to as pAAM/pAA/LMA/SA/ILs-MWCNTs (PLS), is synthesized using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) exfoliated with ionic liquids (ILs) and integrated into a sodium alginate (SA) matrix. This combination allows for a tunable three-dimensional network that can be customized for optimal performance. The adsorption tests conducted on cationic and anionic dyes, specifically Methylene Blue (MB) and Methyl Orange (MO), reveal that the adsorption mechanisms are primarily driven by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and π–π stacking, which are critical for effective dye removal.

The study employs pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models to analyze the kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption process, providing a robust framework for understanding the hydrogel's performance. Notably, the cyclic adsorption tests demonstrate the hydrogel's excellent reusability, indicating that it can maintain its structural integrity and adsorption capacity over multiple cycles. This durability is essential for industrial applications, where cost-effectiveness and efficiency are paramount.

Ultimately, the introduction of this sustainably synthesized hydrogel represents a significant advancement in the field of wastewater treatment. By combining mechanical strength with high adsorption performance, the PLS adsorbent not only addresses the immediate challenges posed by dye wastewater but also aligns with the growing demand for environmentally friendly materials in industrial processes. This research paves the way for further exploration into sustainable solutions that can effectively mitigate the environmental impact of industrial effluents.
