EPRI’s GridFAST helps fleets and EV charging providers streamline communication with utilities

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has introduced GridFAST, an innovative online portal aimed at enhancing communication between fleet operators, EV charging providers, and the 3,200 electric utilities across the United States. This initiative addresses a critical gap in the current utility planning process, which has traditionally been slow to adapt to the rapid deployment of electric vehicles (EVs). With the procurement of EVs occurring in a matter of days or months, rather than the years typically associated with building loads, the need for utilities to receive early notifications about new projects is paramount. GridFAST facilitates this by allowing customers to provide preliminary site information, enabling utilities to better anticipate and manage the integration of new electrical loads into the grid.

GridFAST serves as a centralized platform for customers to engage with utilities, streamlining the often cumbersome process of establishing connections and understanding utility requirements. By standardizing the intake process and providing access to relevant utility contacts and EV-related programs, GridFAST empowers fleet operators and charging providers to proactively plan their projects. This not only aids in right-sizing charging needs but also allows utilities to assess the cumulative impact of multiple customer loads, fostering a more efficient grid planning cycle. As several utilities and charging operators have already adopted GridFAST’s Guiding Principles, its implementation signifies a significant step toward enhancing collaboration and efficiency in the evolving landscape of electric mobility.
